I started working in makeup as a career over one year ago. I never dreamt this would be possible. In 2019, I attended university working towards a degree in human nutritional sciences. What a change from where I am now, right? Well, sort of. I have always been highly passionate about sharing and educating others on the health benefits of things that aren’t taught conventionally. For example, healthy skin starts on the inside and goes beyond just drinking water and eating ‘healthy.’ I was passionate about what I was learning, but going the university route wasn’t for me. After two semesters, I dropped out. I fell back on the skills I already had and started working multiple jobs just to make ends meet.

I was exhausted all the time! I would wake up at 5am to get to my first job at 6:30 and finish my last job at 6:30pm. I was working whatever jobs I could get and just barely surviving. There had to be more like I was called to something more, but I could figure out what it was. Summer of 2021, my now husband and I got engaged. I knew working like this would not be possible once we married. We were moving to a city an hour away from my jobs, meaning I would have to add two hours of driving onto my already long days. That’s when I got a steady 9-5 that paid better, it had the flexibility that my other jobs lacked, but I knew administrative work differed from my calling. However, it did allow me to discover skills I didn’t even know I had. While working this job, I stumbled across my makeup company on social media (actually, as a recommendation from my mom). I knew long term I wanted a job that could provide for my current and future family. I have always dreamed about being a stay-at-home mom one day, and I didn’t want to burden my husband with having to choose to have me stay at home and give up one of our incomes.

I enrolled immediately. I knew this opportunity would give me everything I had dreamt of. However, it took work. Even tho I was rediscovering my love for makeup and having fun, it was tough to crack into the world of working online. All at the same time, my husband and I were starting our own business and picking up and moving to Mexico for the winter. By starting our virtual assistant business, I developed and perfected the skills I needed to start Abbygail May Beauty. Now I love what I do. I work with a makeup company that prioritizes having toxin-free products because they know that what goes on your skin affects your health. I can share everything I have learnt online with you! I wanted to create a space where people could feel comfortable hanging out, and a community of like-minded women who love makeup and are looking to provide more for their families than the standard 9-5 can offer. I also wanted to give women all the content I wished I had when I started doing makeup (all located in one place). Getting here has been a long and twisted road. Still, by the grace of God, here I am doing what I have been called to and hopefully giving other women who feel stuck, like I did, that there is hope and there is another way.
