Finding the right foundation for your skin

Finding the right foundation for your skin type is challenging, with many different products available. There are powders, liquids, sticks, sprays and more. Understanding which type is best for specific applications will change your makeup and find the right foundation for your skin type.

The different types of foundations

The different types of foundations are numerous. However, let’s focus on the five most common:

  • BB Cream
  • Liquid Foundation
  • Stick Foundation
  • Spray Foundation
  • Pressed Powder Foundation

Each type of foundation has a different purpose. For example, some foundations offer light or full coverage, and some are better for oily or dry skin. That is why it is crucial to figure out these two things before selecting a foundation. Firstly, you need to know what characteristics you are looking for in a foundation. Some examples are coverage (light to complete), finish (matte or dewy), longevity (how long you typically wear foundation), etc. These are just a few things to consider when selecting the perfect foundation! Secondly, you must consider your skin type when choosing the foundation that is right for your skin type.

The four most commonly talked about skin types are:

  • Normal Skin
  • Oily Skin
  • Dry Skin
  • Combination Skin (can be dry or oily/some areas of your face are dry, while areas of your face are oily)

How do i know what my skin type is?

Figuring out your skin type is quite simple. There is an easily detectable trait you can look for when determining your skin type. In fact, you might already have an idea of your skin type by observing how your skin behaves daily.

Normal Skin: Normal skin type is when you don’t have overly oily or overly dry skin. With normal skin, you may experience bouts our oil or dryness, but these bouts are due to an outside factor, weather, sports etc.

Oily Skin: Oily skin type is having skin that feels greasy or oily. The oily feeling to your skin is typical around your forehead, nose or chin, your T-Zone. However, oil is not limited to these three areas on your face. If your face feels greasy most of the time, your skin type is oily.

Dry Skin: Dry skin type is having dry or tight skin. With dryer skin, you might notice patches when the skin is flakey and comes off with a finger sweep. Dryness can affect anywhere throughout the face.

Combination Skin: Combination skin type is when your skin is greasy and dry at the same time or if it often rotates between the two. Selecting the right products for combination skin can be tricky because you want to mattify the oil without drying your skin out any further.

Understanding your skin type is crucial to finding the right foundation.

SKin type test

If you are still unsure about your skin type, wash your face with warm water and pat dry. DO NOT APPLY AN PRODUCT. Wait 30 minutes. How does your skin feel?

You have a normal skin type if your skin feels neither dry nor oil.

If your face feels greasy, you have an oily skin type.

You have a dry skin type if your skin feels tight or dry.

If your skin feels tight and oil You have a combination skin type.

Consider your skin's level of sensitivity when finding the right foundation for your skin type

Always consider skin sensitivity with all skin types. Skin sensitivity can affect each one of these skin types. Most people know if they have sensitive skin or not. However, sensitive skin is when new products make your skin break out for a period of time or when you can’t use certain products altogether due to the skin irritation they cause.

Always be cautious of your beauty products’ ingredients. However, this is extremely important for people with sensitive skin! Many chemicals in beauty products irritate a lot of people’s skin. The five foundations discussed in this article are all E-U Certified. That means 1300 chemicals can cause irritation band from these products. Most products sold today in North America need to meet this certification.

bb cream

BB Cream is for girls looking for a light-weight, natural look. This BB Cream will leave your skin looking refreshed and dewy. You can wear BB Cream independently or as a tinted base for a fuller coverage foundation. BB Cream is perfect if you want a light-weight product colour to correct your skin tone. This product also works as a great base helping to extend the longevity of your foundations if you struggle with oily or dry skin. BB Cream is not the right product if you are looking for a medium to full-coverage product or if you are looking for a product to cover blemishes.

Liquid Foundation

My favourite liquid foundation is Younique Touch Serum+ Foundation, it goes on very smoothly. This foundation is non-cakey, unlike other liquid foundations. This is because the foundation is infused with a serum to leave your skin looking skin-like hours after you apply your makeup. You will get longer wear out of the product with a liquid foundation. This foundation is transfer-proof, smudge-proof, and resistant to heat and humidity* making it a great all-around foundation! Liquid foundation is also buildable. For lighter coverage, use one to two drops of product. For fuller coverage, repeat the application process until desired coverage. I love that the Younique Touch Serum+ Foundation includes ingredients to protect your skin from environmental stressors!

Something unique to this foundation is the ingredients used to formulate it:

  • Sodium hyaluronate is a form of hyaluronic acid known for its water-retention properties. It gives skin a more plump and smooth appearance.
  • Ectoin is a multi-functional ingredient that is known to help protect against environmental stressors and blue light damage while also nourishing and hydrating skin for a more youthful appearance.
  • Gardenia taitensis flower extract, also known as tiare extract, has moisturizing, purifying, and skin-soothing properties.
  • Glucose is a natural sugar humectant that helps bind moisture to skin.

If you have oily skin this product is amazing in combination with the Younique Touched Complexion+ Pressed Powder!

SPray Foundation

Much like liquid foundation, this is also buildable. The most significant difference is that this spray foundation will leave you with that air-brush finish. This is a light-weight option and won’t clog your pores (a win for my sensitive-skinned girls). Spray foundation is excellent for blurring imperfections while leaving the skin with a natural look. This product has up to 12 hours of longevity, allowing for comfortable and confident wear all day long. Spray foundation is versatile. You can use it on your chest, arms and back for a smooth, air-brushed look where ever you desire. This product has a matte finish, making it an excellent option for girls with oily skin!

Stick Foundation

I love the versatility that a stick foundation offers. This is a great medium to full coverage foundation. However, it also works as a fantastic full coverage spot concealer, contour stick or highlighting stick. Plus it is great for on the go touch ups. This stick foundation leaves your skin with a satin finish making this a great product for any skin type looking for medium to full coverage.

Pressed powder Foundation

Pressed Powder Foundation is a great light-weight buildable option for girls who are oily and want a foundation to minimize oil. Pressed powder foundation provides a flawless, matte finish to your skin without looking cakey. This foundation is transfer-proof, smudge-proof, and resistant to heat and humidity* I love it is buildable from light-weight to full coverage, allowing you to change the daily coverage you need.

A few key ingredients that make this product a great option:

  • Sodium Hyaluronate, a form of hyaluronic acid, helps give skin a smoother, more flawless-looking appearance.
  • Kaolin is a naturally-derived clay that helps reduce the appearance of fine lines and pores.
  • Shea Butter is a moisturizer that helps to nourish and condition the skin.
  • Chamomile, also known as Anthemis Nobilis Flower Extract, contains skin-nourishing antioxidants.
  • Talc-Free Formula that is instead formulated with finely-milled silica to provide a buttery-soft, light-diffusing effect.
