I was guilty of guessing too
For years I was guessing my perfect shade of foundation for my skin tone, just like so many people wearing foundation do! No matter what brand I went with, something always looked off about my makeup. Furthermore, when shopping for foundation, I would pick what I thought matched my skin tone the most and figured if it was too light or dark, I could fix that with bronzer or concealer. This technique works, but it is not ideal and leaves something always looking off about the way your makeup looks.

We must understand what each term means when discussing foundation. This is crucial when it comes to selecting the perfect foundation for you.
First, when we talk about your foundation shade, it refers to the scale of the shades that that foundation falls in. For example, you have anywhere from fair or light to medium to dark and everything in between. Likewise, foundation shade refers to how light or dark your skin is, which will determine what shade of foundation you need to have a perfect match.
Secondly, when we refer to skin tone, we are talking about the tone of your skin. This refers to the undertones of your skin. To repeat, your skin can be anywhere from light to dark, and everyone’s skin (no matter the shade) has undertones. For this reason, your skin’s tone or undertone will fall into one of 3 categories: warm/yellow, cool/pink and neutral.
Understanding your skin's tones
The first and arguably most important thing to understand when trying to match your foundation to your skin tone is understanding our skin tone.
Particularly, determining the right foundation colour for your skin goes beyond light, medium and dark.
First, understanding the undertones of your skin is the key to success! Three primary tones are considered when formulating foundation colours:
– Yellow
– Pink
– Neutral.
In addition, it is vital to know which of these tones your skin resembles most. Because without understanding this, you will be just guessing. If you get a foundation that might be the right shade but doesn’t have the right undertones to match your skin’s natural undertones, your foundation will leave you looking red or almost seasick, which we are trying to avoid!
How to determine your skins undertones
Here is an easy little quiz that will help you determine your skin tone and, ultimately, your correct foundation colour. Knowing your skin tone will also help you match other makeup products better. For example, bronzers and concealers – if you have skin that has warm or yellow undertones, you want to make sure other make products you select also have warm undertones to them for the best possible results on your unique skin!

*Neutral is its own separate undertone, if you scored a neutral skin tone it does not mean you can pick any foundation. You need a foundation that is neither overly warm or overly cool.
